On Wednesday, 26th April, 2023 a group of students from our school took part in a chess tournament for schools organised by the Maltese Chess Federation. This tournament was held at St Ignatius College in Ħandaq. Every school had eight teams of three students each. A total of sixty teams from public schools, church schools and private schools participated in this tournament. This means that more 200 students were present. Our school took part with ten teams.
The atmosphere was full of tension and excitment for the students who gave their utmost during the games played. Unfortunately, due to the complicated logistics of having a large number of teams participating not all planned games were played. In fact the Federation decided that the first five teams shall continue the competition another time. Out of sixty teams and after four rounds, two teams from our school qualified with the best five and made it to the final.
The team ‘St Michael Tal’ was composed by Luke Xerri, Jake Cascun, Eric Zahra and Julian Zammit and the other team ‘St Michael Magnus’ was made up of Kyle Cassar, Isaac Sacco and Kieran Paul Abela. We congratulate them for their success.
On Monday, 1st May the Chess final was held for the first five teams who qualified from the sixty teams who took part in the first phase of this tournament. Our school was represented by the two qualifying teams ‘St Michael Tal’ and ‘St Michael Magnus’ made up of Julian Zammit, Jake Cascun and Luke Xerri.
The final was played on the round robin basis, meaning, everyone plays against each other. The team ‘St Michael Tal’ managed to place second after St Theresa College, Mrieħel Secondary who placed first. ‘St Michael Magnus’ placed fourth.
Kieran Paul Abela won the title of the second best player on Board 2, while Luke Xerri won the Best Player on Board 3.
We congratulate all the participants. A big well done to the Maltese Chess Federation especially Mr Duncan Vella, Mr Robert Novak, Mr Ron Sammut and Ms Jamie Farrugia for organising this tournament. We thank Mr Alex Farrugia for his dedication to teach Chess to our students.
