Members of the Eco School Committee who are in Year 8 were invited at the HSBC National Centre.  Our students had the opportunity to visit their offices and other places accessible to the bank employees.  They were asked to point out what could be improved in the premises for the benefit of the employees and the environment itself.  Our Year 8 students then discussed with  Ms Lorraine Zammit these opinions.

We would like to thank HSBC Malta, especially Mr Glenn Bugeja and Ms Lorraine Zammit for giving this opportunity to our students.

On the 23rd April, we celebrate the World Book Day.  During this week at school, we celebrated this event by inviting two famous Maltese authors Rita Camilleri and Clare Azzopardi.  Ms Camilleri met our Year 8 and 9 students and shared her experience as an authoress with them.  Ms Clare Azzopardi had a reading session with Year 7 students and met our Year 10 students.  During this week we also organised a book sale with reduced prices in the school foyer.

We believe in reading and urge our students to read.  Reading helps learning new things, improves writing skills and increases vocabulary.  Books increase the knowledge about cultures and past eras.  Besides this, reading opens your mind when it comes to discussing certain matters.  We are pleased that a good number of students in our school visit the library regularly to borrow books.

We would like to thank Mr Falzon, our librarian for his work in the library and our Maltese teachers for co-ordinating the meetings with the Maltese authors Ms Camilleri and Ms Azzopardi.

As part of the Book Week we had a special reading session at school organised by the Minister of Education and the Minister of Inclusion.  Our Year 7 students gathered in the school hall for this reading session from the book entitled “Jien u Beppe, Beppe u jien”, a book which Beppe Caruana a Year 7 student wrote together with the authoress of various Maltese books Clare Azzopardi.

This session was co-ordinated by our Maltese teachers and involved Gabriel and Miguel Casha, two Year 7 students who acted as comperes during this reading session.  The Hon Minister Dr Clifton Grima, Education Minister and Hon Julia Farrugia Portelli, Inclusion Minister read the book “Jien u Beppe, Beppe u jien” together with Clare Azzopardi.

During this session Clare Azzopardi explained to those present the idea behind this book.

After Beppe presented his new book “Jien Fekruna tal Baħar” to the Ministers.  We then invited Francesco Mangion and Stephen Edwards, Beppe’s friends to read this book.

To conclude this session, the Headmaster addressed the students by mentioning the project launched by the President of Malta, : “L-ilsien Malti għal qalbi” and emphasised the need for students to appreciate the Maltese language and urged them to read Maltese books.  Mr D’Amato thanked the Education and Inclusion Ministers for joining us during this reading session and thanked the LSEs for their excellent work with the students.

It is always our pleasure to welcome parents at school.

Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 26th April we invited parents of our students for a meeting at school.  During the first meeting Dr David Aloisio spoke about the importance of the Maltese language and how it should be used.  The second part of the meeting was addressed by the Headmaster who shared experiences and advice to help the parents understand more their children now that they are growing into adolescents.  During these meetings, Mr Oliver Aquilina, our Chaplain explained the school Ethos.

We thank those parents for welcoming our invitation and attended for these meetings.

Monday, 24th April and Tuesday, 25th April, our Year 8 students had a fieldwork outing in Buskett.  During this fieldwork they observed different types of plants and insects.  They learnt how these plants adapt themselves to the Maltese climate and learnt about indigenous and endemic animals.  This fieldwork forms part of the Science syllabus.

We would like to thank Ms Maria Caruana and Ms Alison Bahmuller, our science teachers for co-ordinating this fieldwork and for their work with our students at school.  Thanks also to the LSEs who accompanied the students.

On Friday, 21st April group of Year 10 Biology students had a visit to the National Blood Donation Centre in Gwardamangia.  During this visit they had the opportunity to note the procedure one goes through when blood is donated.  The students also visited the laboratories which are used to process the blood.  The need for blood donation is always a necessity and donating blood is always a good deed of solidarity to save lives.  We would like to thank Ms Maria Caruana, our Biology teacher who organised this outing and Dr Melissa Debono for accompanying her.

On Friday, 21st April our school held an open evening for prospective students and their parents.  After a short prayer, the Headmaster presented the school’s educational vision offered to our students.  Parents and children were afterwards invited for a tour around the school.  We would like to thank all those who welcomed our invitation and showed interest for their son’s education.

Year 8 and 9 students from our school took part in a competition organised by Heritage Malta about the Roman Empire in Malta.  Our students, with the help of our History and Art teachers designed artistic posters and graphical videos which can be displayed in the Heritage Malta portal.  We congratulate all the students who participated, especially those who made it to the finals.  The certificates of participation were awarded in the museum of St Pauls Catacombs. We would like to thank Mr Nathan Buttigieg and Ms Laura Cachia who guided our students throughout this competition.

We have recently received a receipt of €770 from the Don Bosco Foundation, for a donation we had made for the Salesians who are working in Aleppo, Syria.

Aleppo is the city who suffered most during the earthquake which occurred last February.  In Aleppo, the Salesians have schools who first, suffered during the persecution from the ISIS and now with damage caused by the earthquake.

As a school, our policy is that we do not collect money, but in this circumstance we thought it would be a good deed to donate the profits collected from hot dogs sold during Sports Day to the Salesians in Aleppo.  Our Year 10 students offered this donation to Fr Jake SDB when we visited the Don Bosco Oratory in Dingli for lenten spiritual exercises.

We would like to thank all members of staff who prepared and sold the hot dogs.
