On Wednesday, December 4, the Year 11 Biology students visited Ghar Dalam in Birżebbuġa to learn about the evolution of life on the Maltese islands. The visit began at the museum, where the students observed fossils of extinct animals, such as hippopotamuses and small elephants, along with evidence of human existence in Malta dating back around 7,400 years.

They also enjoyed the surrounding natural environment, which was adorned with native trees and plants, before entering the highlight of the site: the cave itself. Inside, they examined layers of prehistoric sediments, bones of extinct animals, and the formations of stalactites and stalagmites. They learned that Għar Dalam is a protected Natura 2000 site because it is home to endemic and rare species, including the cave groundhog that resides in the inner parts of the cave.

During this week, the Year 10 students participated in an activity organised by Heritage Malta at the Maritime Museum in Birgu. The activity consisted of two sessions. First, they visited the temporary exhibition titled ‘An Island at the Crossroads,’ where they had the opportunity to analyse primary sources, including paintings related to maritime activities during the Knights of Malta period.
Following this, they explored the ‘Clean Oceans’ exhibition, which focused on sea pollution and its impact on historic maritime sites. During this session, the students conducted a scientific experiment that demonstrated how Carbon Dioxide negatively affects our seas.  Special thanks to Mr. Buttigieg for organising such engaging and educational visits.

Today, the Year 7 students participated in the Reading Ambassadors activity organized by the National Literacy Agency. Professional football coaches and former national players Mr Carmel Busuttil, Mr Saviour Darmanin, and Mr Joseph Grech led the sessions. They encouraged the students to explore the wonderful world of reading by using engaging sports books and sharing their personal experiences in sports. These sessions were an excellent learning experience for our students, and we hope that in the near future, we can continue to collaborate closely through the Footballers Read and Write Programme “Bil-Qari u l-Kitba Niskorja”.

Today, the Year 10 Art group had the opportunity to visit the GlassXpressions workshop in Birkirkara, where they created glass Christmas ornaments. Thanks to Ms. Laura Cachia and Mr. Darren Bugeja for accompanying the students.

On Thursday, November 28, all Year 8 students, accompanied by their Science teachers and Learning Support Educators (LSEs), participated in the Unconventional Science Careers event at the University of Malta. Participants explored a wide range of subjects, such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, ICT, health science, space sciences, and many others. During this visit, the students engaged in various activities, including laboratory tours, exhibitions, demonstrations, games, and much more.

On Thursday, November 28, students from Years 9, 10, and 11 who study German visited the German-Maltese Circle in Valletta to participate in the German Film Festival. They watched the film titled “Die Pfefferkörner und der Schatz der Tiefsee”, which translates to “The Peppercorns and the Treasure of the Deep Sea”. The story follows two children, Alice and Tarun, as they embark on an adventure to solve the kidnapping of Tarun’s mother. She was a marine researcher who had been abducted by a corrupt businessman and his associate after they discovered that her research was groundbreaking.

Yesterday morning, a group of 33 Year 11 students, along with Mr Aloisio, Mr Mangion, and Mr Bonello, embarked on an educational trip to Poland. This trip, which will last for seven days, includes visits to various historical sites related to the Holocaust, as well as moments of fun for everyone involved. We wish them a wonderful experience and extend our gratitude to the teachers accompanying them and all the staff members who assisted in organising this trip. A special thank you goes to Mr. Martin Abela and Mrs. Janet Agius for their patience!

On Wednesday, 20 November, the green flag ceremony took place, and our school received this honour for the seventh consecutive time. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Her Excellency Ms. Myriam Spiteri Debono, the President of Malta. Over the past two years, our school focused on the theme of ‘Conservation of the Seas.’ Currently, the Eko-Skola committee is working on a new project related to “Soil” for the next two years. We would like to extend our special thanks to all the Eko-Skola members under the guidance and supervision of Mr. Savona and Ms. Edwards for their commitment and dedication.

Today, the Year 9 Economics students, together with Ms Debono Tanti and Ms Abdilla, visited the Maypole Factory. They had a tour around the factory, where they followed the bread-making process and the cake and sweet production process.  The students could relate the production function and resource allocation both as discussed during class and in practice. They had time to ask questions related to the topics they are studying. We would like to thank Ms. Maria and Ms. Maryanne, and the dedicated staff at Maypole for their time and explanations to our students.
