Tuesday, 24th October – On the occasion of Mission Day, we had a visit from Mario Bezzina a member of the MUSEUM Society.  Mr Bezzina has been carrying out missionary work in Kenya for the last eighteen years when he was only 24 years old.  Mario shared his experience as a voluntary teacher in a primary school and at the MUSEUM with children, youths and adults who attend the centre for catholic formation with our students.  Besides Kenya, the Society of Christian Doctrine (MUSEUM) has members in Australia, England, Albania, Poland, Cuba, and Peru.  Lately arrangements are being made to set up a centre in the Philippines.

Today, officials from Gemma organized an event for the Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurial Education students about Socially Responsible Investing.  During this event, the students learned and took part in games and discussions on how to borrow money from trusted people and financial institutions and how to spend money wisely.  One must check products before buying them and take into consideration if they are environmentally friendly and if the seller gives donations to charities on every sale made.  The students were also given examples of how to start a small business and Investing.

Thanks to Ms. Petra Ellul Mercer from Gemma and Mr. Glenn Bugeja from HSBC for this activity.

On Tuesday, 18th October our school united with the Church for a Day of Prayer and Sacrifice to pray for peace in the Holy Land.  During the assembly we prayed for this intention and Years 9 and 10 gathered in the school hall for a presentation prepared by Mr Aloisio.  During this presentation, Mr Aloisio explained the situation in Israel and Palestine by briefing the students of historic events in order for those present to understand better this sad situation.  Our students showed great interest.  After the Chaplain led prayers and hymns for peace.

Between Wednesday, 17th and Friday, 20th October, Mr Savona together with two co-ordinators who work for the EcoSchool project took part in an International Conference of the Globe in Riga, Latvia.  During this conference they presented projects done by Maltese schools.  They were also trained about new protocols.  On Friday they had a school visit and they spent time in a National Park in Riga.

On Thursday, 19th October the Year 7 and 8 students participated in the National Book Festival at the MFCC ta’ Qali.  Upon arriving they were given vouchers to buy books from various stands selling books suitable for children.  The students also watched a theatre representation about the world of books and various interviews with renowned Maltese authors.  Our students showed great enthusiasm and we encourage them to visit our school library more often to borrow books.  Two of our teachers are authors of a good number of books and we promote reading as a good source of knowledge.

With deep sadness we announce that Pierre Formosa, a Year 9 student from our school has passed away while he was abroad for treatment.  Pierre was following online lessons when we received the sad news.  This morning we announced the sad news to our Year 9 students and classmates of Pierre.  Later all the school was informed of this terrible news.  We are all so shocked and saddened by this sudden loss.  The Guidance teachers, the Counsellor, and Assistant Heads together with professionals from the Secretariat offered help and support for the whole day.

The Board of Directors, the Administrative Team and all the staff of St Michael School would like to express their sincere condolences to the parents and relatives of dearest Pierre.  Only faith can sustain us during this difficult time.  May God grant him eternal rest.

Details of the funeral will be announced later.

On Friday, 29th September at school we celebrated the feast of our Patron Saint.  The celebration started with a dialogue between Saint Michael and the Angels.

Soon after Rev Dr Carl Mario Sultana celebrated mass which was animated by the school band.  After everyone was treated to a piece of Maltese timpana in the school garden.  We pray to St Michael to protect and guide us.

Yesterday we welcomed back our Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students.  Everything ran smoothly as planned, and at 08:00 everyone, staff, and students gathered in the school hall.

The Headmaster shared some thoughts about the educational vision of our school and urged the students to behave appropriately and in a mature way.  Soon after the students were entertained with a pleasant feature animated with songs and photos related to activities held during the holidays.  The day proceeded with meetings with the respective assistant heads of each year group.  The students then had the opportunity to meet their teachers according to the timetable.  We wish a fruitful year full of positive experiences to all our students.
