During the past months we worked hard so that today at school we have a multi-sensory room.  Individual attention and our wish to give the best service possible to each student are statements clearly stated in the school ethos and SDP.  Hence our decision to invest in this multi-sensory room which amounted to €42,000.  We would like to thank the parents for their help throughout this mission.  Thanks also to Mr Ian Borg who, together with Mr Simon Camilleri co-ordinated the work on this room.  Thanks also to Ms Maria Mizzi, Occupational Therapist from the Secretariat for her wise advice and for the training offered to our LSEs.  Finally, a huge thank you to Mr Edward Tanti from Be Independent for his professional work to set up this multi-sensory room.

On Friday, 1st March we started recording the students’ attendance with an electronic card (SMID St Michael ID).  Every student was given a card which he must scan when he arrives at school.  The attendance is registered immediately in the school website.  The system records the day and time when the student arrives at school enabling the parents to see the time their son entered school.  If a student fails to attend school, at 08:30 the system shall automatically send an email to inform the parents of the students concerned.

This same card shall also be used to borrow books, pay handouts, and transport and buy from the tuckshop.  The parents shall have a record of all the payments affected by card.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Maurice Aquilina, Director and CEO of M7Alpha Creative Studios – www.m7alpha.com and Mr Christian Grech for always offering professional service to us.

On Thursday, 29th February our Year 10 Biology students went for a fieldwork visit to Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park.  The students appreciated the biodiversity and use of sustainable energy found in this park.  They had the opportunity to observe different habitats like ‘xagħri’, ‘steppa’ u ‘makkja’.  With the help of quadrats, they identified a large variety of plants found on the Maltese islands while they discussed how these plants adapt themselves to the dry climate of Malta.

We thank Ms Maria Caruana, our Biology teacher for organising this fieldwork and Mr Matthew Borg for accompanying her with this group of students.

This workshop was led by Dr Erika Galea, Foundress and Director of the Educational Neuroscience Hub Europe (Malta).  The aim of the workshop was how to adapt scientific research related to neuroscience in the classroom.  The information communicated during the workshop aimed to help our teachers understand better each other and improve their teaching practices.  Educational neuroscience allows educators to apply scientific evidence effectively thus improving their teaching skills.

On Wednesday 21st February our Maltese teachers and LSEs had a training session about Maltese literacy and how to better help our students who find difficulty in this field.  Professionals from the Secretariat for Catholic Education explained about certain resources that can be used during lessons.  They also highlighted methods to help these students improve their Maltese reading.  Students who were already identified with this issue shall now benefit from this programme thanks to this training session

On Thursday, 15th February a small group of Year 11 students had the opportunity to visit the Institute of Creative Arts at Mosta.

Our students had the opportunity to learn about the various courses offered by this Institute which forms part of MCAST.  This institute offers courses about photography, printing, media, productions and product design, theatrical arts, journalism, and digital arts.  This was a fruitful experience for our students.  We thank Mr Wayne Azzopardi who organised this visit and Ms Alison Spiteri who accompanied the group.

On Tuesday, 6th February ten of our Year 8 students took part in an Interschools Football League at De La Salle College.  Our students played against St Albert, St Patrick’s, Verdala and De La Salle schools and placed second.  Nineteen schools participated in this league and eight of them made it to the final.

We congratulate our students and Mr Luke Borg our PE teacher who coached them to take part in this league.

During this week, our EcoSchool committee published online the 28th edition of the EcoSchool Newsletter which is published every three months.  Our students carry out all the necessary research and article writing published in these newsletters.

Thank you and keep up your good work!

As part of the Prince’s Trust syllabus, a group of seven Year 10 students had a voluntary session at Dar tal-Providenza.  Upon arrival they were divided into two groups.  One group helped in the kitchen while the other group helped in washing up and folding the laundry.  This was an educational visit to help our students learn to give a service to the community.

We would like to thank Mr Buttigieg and all the other educators who offer their service to our students.
